This is a picture of my grandfather, Frederick Saunderson.  He married Mabel Harrison and they had 4 children; Gladys, Fred [died very young- buried in an unmarked grave in Southwich cemetery], Robert Cecil, and Norman.
They lived in Gateshead, Newcastle-on-Tyne, England, where he worked as a Fireman [coal shoveler] on the "Flying Scotsman" train until they made the decision to move to the U.S..
He came to the U.S. on July 3rd, 1923 at age 30, via Liverpool England  [ship: Franconia] before my grandmother and children, so as to secure a job first, then send for them when the finances allowed.  Mabel, age 31, arrived in the U.S. on the same ship on September 12th, 1925, when my mother, Gladys, was nine, Robert Cecil was 4, and Norman was 1. On their manifest, Fred's address was listed as 507 W.57th St, NYC. Mabel's mother's address was listed as 10 Maxwell St, Gateshead on Tyne, England.

After arriving in the U.S., he worked first in a hospital in Trenton, N.J., then he got a job with Firestone Tire and Rubber.

He retired from Firestone in the early sixties.  My grandmother died on May 11th, 1968 of heart problems.  He died in 1981 at age 88.   He and my grandmother are buried in Gates of Heaven Cemetery, a little bit north of Valhalla, NY.

Note: He is listed on the ship's manifest [line 019] as "Sanderson" but the description [from Newcastle, Fireman, age 30, 5' 5-1/2" tall, fair complexion & hair, blue eyes, married.] fits exactly.

To see the passenger lists go into the folder marked “images” and then look under “Saunderson”. You'll find them there.
