This is my mother's brother, Robert Cecil Saunderson. My grandparents called him Cecil...; so did we. He belonged to a Pipe and Drum Corp marching band called Black Watch, and he played the bagpipes. One of the fond early memories of my childhood was watching them practice in Kings-bridge Armory in the Bronx. The place was huge, and to hear the wailing of the bagpipes and the thunder of the big bass drums was awesome. Uncle Norman, Cecil's brother, played the drums. I remember, as if it were yesterday, playing around with the Norman's drums with Cecil's daughters, Carol Ann and Deborah, my cousins, in my grandmothers apartment on Bogart Avenue, in the Bronx. The bagpipes, on the other hand were not fun. ...kind of like playing with an upright vacuum cleaner when all the attachments are falling off! |
