This photo of my Ferrero grandparents was taken in the backyard of their home on 1738 Adams Street in the Bronx.  I'm guessing the time to be in the late 30's, early 40's. Behind them to the left in the photo was the basement kitchen door where they entertained when there was a larger crowd. Some of the photos of get-togethers is taken in that room

The house was three stories. They rented out the middle floor. They lived on the top floor. To the left not seen in the photo was a long un-heated extension divided into three sections. The closest to the house was used to keep barrels of home-made wine. The middle stored apples, and the last coldest was to hang deer and other game that my father's uncle Tony brought home.

Also in the basement was Uncle Tony's workshop and a room that had a large safe and Uncle Tony's gun collection. I spent most Sundays in the workshop when I was young after Sunday dinner. The furnace was in the workshop room, so it was always warm. It used to be a coal furnace, and my father told me how he would have to shovel coal into it.
